Wellsprings of the Art of Education- Three Reversals, C Wiechert

Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 6.38.04 PMChristof Wiechert is an experienced teacher, teacher trainer and past head of the Pedagogical Section in Dornach. In this article he points to three areas of confusion arising in the practice of Waldorf Education and shares insights on how the teachers can work against them in strengthening their inner work. The confusions stem from the following: The idea that the teacher works out of freedom. The idea that the waldorf curriculum is a system. and the idea that the curriculum is built around traditions. Wiechert identifies three paths, which he calls reversals, that can contribute to overcoming these potential areas of confusion and strengthen the work in the school. THe first is to strengthen our attitude that we are learners, striving to learn and grow through our work in the school.  The second is to strengthen the idea that the task of teaching is not an intellectual one but a moral spiritual one. Thirdly, he points to the strengthening of the faculty meeting so a safe and clear space is created out of which colleagues can meet, support one another and look at the education together. Wiechert goes onto illuminate the basics task of the teacher outlined by Steiner- to take initiative, to take interest, to be devoted to the truth, and to not go sour. Christof goes on to add a fifth - to be committed to building a community of teachers. This one, he thinks, is becoming more and more essential as waldorf education moves into the future.

Community Relations and Outreach, C Pietzner, from The Art of Administration, AWSNA

Community relations defines a very broad area both operationally and conceptually. Because of this it may seem abstract, remote, unnecessary, ethereal and diversionary, and not relating to the “true” function of a school, especially a Waldorf School! Such an attitude is perilous, and will be ever more so as the American public awakens to the need for a deeper, more comprehensive and effective relationship with education altogether. It (the public) will demand greater participation in mainstream education, and those forms of education that have been proven over time to be successful and relevant to the needs of children and nations. Waldorf Education and all its exponents will wish to respond to and encourage such a dialogue, such an involvement. This dialogue will include the area of community relations!

One of the most exciting experiences in the life of a Waldorf School is to encounter the steady stream of children who find their way to the school, their class, and their teachers. The journey to the school seems to be through the most varied and interesting circumstances.

The process of Admissions is there as a helpful guide in making the choice of sending oneʼs child to a Waldorf School as conscious as possible for the prospective parent, and for the school. A clear process also helps the teacher to receive the child into their class with knowledge and forethought so that the needs of the child can be met.
